In a statement on its facebook page today, the Oxford Police Department said students at Miami University have been getting fraudulent phone calls from scammers.
The post said several Miami students reported getting phone calls from someone saying they are with the Internal Revenue Service and that the students owe taxes. They are also told failure to pay will result in a warrant and arrest, and the person is demanding money immediately.
“The caller ID displayed is an actual number from police agencies, including Oxford Police, Miami University Police and other area police agencies,” the OPD said in its post. “This is a SCAM. Do not send money, do not engage the caller. Simply hang up the phone.”
